Shams Al Maarif Society

MoroccoThe Shams Al Maarif Society was established in December 1996 in the Moroccan capital, Rabat. The main objectives of the Society are to give children from poor families access to an education, as well as fight against poverty, illiteracy and child neglect.

According to UNICEF nearly 30 per cent of the population in Morocco is less than 14 years old and around 650,000 children grow up without the care and protection of their parents. Many of these children end up living on the street. At the government’s initiative, centres have been opened by Moroccan civil society, represented by non-governmental organisations and associations to reintegrate neglected and street children into the school system. However, these centres are unable reach all of the children in need of protection, education and care.

Joining in their mission to provide educational opportunities to children in need, in 2015, the Emirates Airline Foundation supported the Shams Al Maarif Society’s two latest projects, the renovating, building and furnishing of a new pre-school and a new education centre in Rabat.

The pre-school provides early learning for 60 pre-school children between 4 – 6 years old. The education centre focuses on literacy classes, affiliated with an existing primary school in Rabat.
