The Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children

Colombo, Sri LankaThe Intensive Care Unit at The Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in Colombo was in dire need of repair and funds when the Emirates Airline Foundation stepped in to help. The entire unit was refurbished with new furniture and equipment in the year 2008 at a cost of US $55,000.00.

A new floor, new beds, new medical equipment and even new window blinds, have not only given the unit a whole new look, but has resulted in the provision of better medical care to seriously sick children admitted there.

The foundation recently allowed a US $19,500 grant for a vacuum plant which supports life-saving equipment at every bed in the ICU. Apart from this, regular monthly support on medical disposables is being provided.

“With the seasonal spread of Dengue fever many more critically ill children are referred to the ICU round the clock. The staff here are overworked but are very grateful for the life-saving facilities provided by the foundation. These new facilities have shown very encouraging results with more children being treated successfully and mortality rates dropping,” said Nives Fernandes, co-ordinator of the project.

The new facilities have shown very encouraging results already as more and more children are treated successfully at the hospital. Mortality rates have declined and happier faces in the wards are a direct result of the good work achieved through the foundation.
