For the last ten years, UK Charity MEET (MEDICAL EDUCATIONAL EXCHANGE TEAMS) has been travelling to Vietnam to perform life-saving and life-transforming surgeries for children.

MEET supports health science education by fostering international health teaching collaborations. Surgery trips aim to teach local professionals in specific skills, such as paediatric surgical and anaesthetic techniques, whilst providing corrective surgery for underprivileged children in the region.

The most recent mission saw a combination of UK and USA-based surgeons and medical professionals (almost 60 in total) travel to Can Tho to perform corrective surgeries and also educate and train local medical personnel, establishing paediatric surgical services to better serve the local population.

The Emirates Airline Foundation was pleased to sponsor travel for 29 of the UK volunteers.

The Paediatric Surgery Delegation and the Educational Exchange Program was headed by Rob Gertler and Anh Phoung-Ly as the co-leaders of MEET along with Lance Tooke and Nancy Chee.

The eight day trip was an immensely busy programme. In total, the team performed surgeries on 32 children, aged from 9 months to 15 years old. As well as surgeries, the team also delivered training in 20 different areas ranging from anaesthesiology, to medical writing, to social work.
