Surgical mission to Giridih, India

The Emirates Airline Foundation sponsored a surgical mission to Giridih, India, in February 2014 that delivered surgical care to 75 patients in need. The mission was completed by a team of 14 plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses volunteering with The Virginia Children’s Connection (VCC) from Charlottesville, Virginia, USA.

Most of the patients treated were children, suffering from burn injuries from open cooking fires. There were also a number of patients presenting cleft lip and cleft palate.

Over the course of the mission, the team performed 120 procedures, and the plastic surgeons were able to meet and share their knowledge with local surgeons and medical professionals about plastic surgery techniques.

Travel for this mission was made possible thanks to donations to the Emirates Airline Foundation. Learn more about ways to donate.
