Fikelela, which means “reach out” in Xhosa, is an outreach programme providing care and housing for up to 40 very young children, from 0 to 8 years, who have been abandoned, neglected or orphaned, affected or infected by HIV/AIDS.

Founded in 2000, Fikelela is situated in Mandela Park Khayelitsha and serves the area of the Western Cape and is affiliated with the Anglican Diocese of Cape Town. Children are nursed back to health and put on anti-retrovirals, placed into educational facilities and provided with early childhood development programmes, including sport and recreation.

The aim at Fikelela is to reunite children with their families, and where this is not possible, children are placed into good foster homes which are carefully screened and monitored by social workers.

"We are so honoured for the support of from the Emirates Airline Foundation and Emirates customers that has helped the children in such a special and meaningful way,” said Beverley Hendricks, co-ordinator at Fikelela. “The children have been going out to the beach, visiting a play centre called Monkey Town, taken to a pool party at Tokai and being invited to a birthday party in Constantia. These activities excite our children, and we are able to have more of these outings thanks to our new bigger vehicle"
